A FAMILY-run care home group has embraced the Parisian spirit with an Olympic garden competition – encouraging residents and team members to pay homage to the speed, strength, and agility showcased by athletes on the global stage.
Nellsar Care Homes recently invited its 13 homes across Kent, Surrey and Essex to unite through creativity and gardening, celebrating the biggest sporting event in the calendar while preparing its gardens for the summer.
Participating homes were encouraged to incorporate iconic Olympic symbols, such as the rings, torch and flags, or even add a Parisian flair to its displays.
Launched in sync with the start of the Olympics, the homes had two weeks to bring its creative displays to life. As the Olympics drew to a close, the winners were announced, with three homes earning podium finishes in a closely contested competition, while the other homes were acknowledged as strong runners-up.
Abbotsleigh Care Home, in Staplehurst, emerged victorious, earning £250 in garden centre vouchers. Its entry was commended for its extensive use of garden space and the joy it brought to its residents. Its glow in the dark Olympic rings and a flagpole display visible from all lounges, were particular highlights.
Sonya Lodge Residential Care Home, in Dartford, claimed the silver spot and £150 in vouchers with a French flag flower bed. Team members, residents and relatives also painted their hands in Olympic colours and decorated the garden table. Large Olympic rings were suspended above the table and the whole garden was awash with flags.
Woodstock Residential Care Home, in Sittingbourne, took bronze position, winning £100 in vouchers. Its garden featured an Olympic wall with handprints and decorated recycled hubcaps for a colourful and creative display.
