apetito’s new webinar offers expert insights to enhance care

apetito has launched a new instalment of its “Lunch With…”  webinar series, focusing on how care homes can enhance the dining experience for those living with dementia to support good nutritional intake.

The FREE series invites a range of experts in care and nutrition to discuss important issues and topics impacting the care home sector.

In this episode, host Sophia Cornelius, development dietitian at apetito, is joined by professor Jane Murphy, professor of nutrition at Bournemouth University and a registered nutritionist and dietitian, and experienced speech and language therapist Tracy Broadley Jackson, to deep dive into the importance of supporting appropriate nutrition through taking a personalised approach and utilising modified foods where necessary.

Viewers will understand more on how dementia impacts on an individual’s eating habits and mealtime behaviours, as well as the resulting nutritional risks that can occur such as malnutrition, dehydration and unintended weight loss.

Jane offers care home staff actionable advice in how to identify the warning signs of malnutrition to ensure early intervention and support resident wellbeing.

The important role that both texture modified meals and finger foods play in supporting the nutritional intake of those living with swallowing issues is also addressed during the discussion, and how care homes can minimise safety risks through a deeper understanding of IDDSI guidelines.

Richard Woodward, general manager for care homes at apetito, said: “It was a privilege to have both Jane and Tracy join us for this episode, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and experience in older people’s nutrition and how to provide the best possible dining experience for those living with dementia.

“Giving the significance of “getting it right” when it comes to residents’ nutrition, and the grave impact it can have on overall health and wellbeing, this discussion is a powerful one to be having.

“Care homes must ensure they are providing meals that are safe for residents, as well as fostering a dining experience that promotes good nutritional intake.”
