TWO care homes have fallen victim to a heartless scam by a company posing as “The Royal Train Ride”.
The scam targeted Shipdham Manor in Norfolk and Haughgate House in Woodbridge, Suffolk, part of Healthcare Homes. Both had enthusiastically planned festive activities for their residents and local communities this Christmas season.
The fraudulent company emailed the care homes, offering an enchanting “Polar Express” experience. Shipdham Manor, excited to provide a memorable day for its residents and visitors, booked a full-day experience for over £400 as part of its highly anticipated Christmas Bazaar scheduled for this Saturday (December 21).
The funds used for this booking were generously donated by a family member of a former resident as a heartfelt thank-you for the exceptional care the home provided their mother.
Haughgate House was also scammed, losing £100 after attempting to book a similar experience to bring festive cheer to its residents.
“We are devastated and deeply saddened by this scam, which has robbed our residents of the joy and excitement we had planned for them,” said Chelsea Mears, activities coordinator.
“At Shipdham Manor the donated funds held a special significance, which makes it all the more upsetting.”
Healthcare Homes is urging other care homes and community organisations to remain vigilant against similar fraudulent schemes.
Despite this setback, Shipdham Manor remains committed to ensuring their Christmas Bazaar will go ahead as planned. The staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to reorganise activities and provide an equally magical day for their residents and visitors.
