Castle fascinates curious care home residents

RESIDENTS from Holmes Care’s Willow House Care Home in Cellardyke explored the magic of Kellie Castle on a recent trip to the historic monument.

The fairytale stone towers and scent of old roses reminded resident Flora Fotheringham of one of her favourite childhood books Alice in Wonderland, which inspired her life-long love of gardening.

She said: “The castle is magnificent, wandering around the lawns I imagined the Queen of Hearts playing croquet with a flamingo. There are secrets behind every door.”

The great hall of the castle houses an illusory feature with two mirrors either side of the west window. Designed by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer, it creates an effect where your reflection stays the same size no matter how far away you stand.

Bev Rann, deputy manager at Willow House, added: “The residents had a fantastic day at Kellie Castle, it was a pleasure to hear them reminisce about the childhood stories they love.”
