Home hosts numerous events for its residents

RESIDENTS at The Oaks Nursing Home in Newtown, Powys, part of the Sandstone Care Group, have been using new skills to weave Catalan tension trays thanks to the guidance of Deborah Jones from Wonky Willow.

Catalan tension trays are decorative with a traditional use for serving food such as cheese and bread. The weaving session began by creating a circular frame and from there using locally grown willow to weave across the frame.

Cheryl Morris, activities coordinator at The Oaks, said: “The willow weaving session was fantastic. It has been especially beneficial as it promotes positive mental health and a sense of togetherness and achievement.

“What the residents created were practical and decorative accomplishments that they were proud to be able to share with family, staff and other residents.”

The visit from Wonky Willow is just one of many recent events at The Oaks. Recently, residents were treated to a special performance by Music Anywhere, a non-profit organisation that brings live music into communities.

Led by singer Cat Nunn, the singalong brought residents and staff together to enjoy songs spanning a variety of genres, from Tom Jones to Elvis Presley, and even a special Welsh favourite, Calon Lan.
