Home supports local junior football team with warm gesture

THE DurhamGate Care Home has supported Auckland Moors United FC’s under 10s team by funding new trackside coats to help keep the players warm while on the touchline.

The connection was made through Vicki Hughes, a night team member and one of the home’s original recruits. Vicki, whose son plays for the team and who volunteers with the club, approached the team at The DurhamGate to see if they could help.

The care home was delighted to step in and contribute to this meaningful cause that champions both community and youth development.

Andrew Long, CEO of Adore Care Homes, which operates the facility, said: “We’re always looking for ways to strengthen community ties and create joyful, shared experiences for our residents.

“Supporting the under 10s with something as simple – but important – as a warm coat feels like a natural fit. It’s a small gesture that brings people together, across generations.”

To celebrate the budding relationship, the under 10s team will soon be visiting The DurhamGate to meet residents and show off their new coats. In return, the home hopes to take residents along to matches in the near future to cheer the players on from the sidelines.

Football is already a strong theme at The DurhamGate, with many residents being lifelong fans – particularly of Newcastle United. One resident, Doreen Hughes, even has a personal connection to the club through her brother, who once played for them. Football matches are often screened in the home’s cinema room, where residents gather to enjoy the game together.
