Kenton Hall care home celebrates 30 years on historic site

A NEWCASTLE care home marked 30 years on its site with an anniversary party attended by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Councillor Henry Gallagher, and the Lady Mayoress.

The history of Kenton Hall can be traced back hundreds of years.

It is recorded on an estate plan dating from 1841 and is thought to have originated as a farmhouse or a house connected to the local colliery. Historical records show that a shipowner was living at the hall in 1861 and a barrister in 1881, before Newcastle City Council acquired the property in 1948.

The celebration was particularly significant for the Handa family, who have owned Kenton Hall throughout its 30 years as a purpose-built care home.

Ninety eight-year-old Mr Handa Senior, who was a special guest, played a hands-on role in the design and development of the care home three decades ago, helping to create a modern, purpose-built facility.

Today, Kenton Hall is a modern care home providing residential, nursing, palliative and respite care, with residents supported to maintain their independence and individuality.

Steve Massey, operations manager at Solehawk, which operates Kenton hall care home said: “Thirty years is a tremendous milestone for Kenton Hall and it was wonderful to celebrate it with our residents, their families, our colleagues and friends of the home.

“What makes this anniversary particularly special is the continuity behind Kenton Hall. The Handa family has been involved throughout those 30 years, with Mr Handa Senior taking a very personal interest in the original design of the purpose-built home.”

Although over the years buildings and care have changed enormously at Kenton Hall, the heart has remained the same, creating a place where people are cared for with dignity, compassion and respect, and where they can truly feel at home.

Speaking at the event, Councillor Henry Gallagher Lord Mayor of Newcastle, said: “I was delighted to help the wonderful Kenton Hall celebrate Its 30th anniversary.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic place which I have a personal connection with and I am honoured to be here today.”
