More than 90 per cent of care employees would take a job offering skills development

NEW research has found that 90.3% of employees working in the care sector would take a job if it offered skills development – which would be hugely beneficial considering the staffing pressures operators are under in the wake of the pandemic.

The findings, which come from a [LINK: new toolkit developed by Connect2Care called See V], reveal that this crucial training opportunity, which can come in the form of an apprenticeship, can also unlock potential skills sitting within existing care teams.

Investment in upskilling staff can help boost team morale and offer a clear pathway to career progression, which so many sector employees seek.

However, four out of five employees believe there’s less emphasis on training and development as they progress through their careers, and less than 40% of care operators actually offer apprenticeships at all career levels.

[LINK: The toolkit], which aims to redefine outdated perceptions around these lifelong learning pathways, highlights that there is an abundance of apprenticeship courses available for people, no matter their career stage or level of seniority within a care organisation.

“There are huge misconceptions around care sector apprenticeships in the UK,” says Jill Whittaker OBE, Managing Director of Connect2Care. “Most sector employees believe they are only for those new to the sector, and less than half of businesses offer this flexible training option to workers at all career stages, meaning there are great swathes of care employees around the country with untapped potential talent, or who think they have no means to diversify their skills while remaining with their current employer.

“We’re dedicated to educating care operators on the benefits that apprenticeships can bring an entire workforce, not just new starters – such as improved wellbeing, better career progression and a more loyal team less likely to seek better opportunities elsewhere.

“I urge any organisation who’s interested in nurturing their team and wants to transform the ambition many employees harbour into useful skillsets to [LINK: download our new See V toolkit].”
