RESIDENTS at Featherton House care home in Deddington were delighted by some very special visitors – including a dog, rabbits, snakes, a tortoise, a white rat and even a lizard.
The animal encounter was part of a pet therapy experience brought to the home, designed to offer comfort, joy and stimulation to residents through interaction with a variety of creatures, both soft and scaly.
Hilda Sanyika, home manager at Featherton House, said: “It was such a wonderful experience for everyone.
“The residents absolutely loved the animals – even the more unusual ones. Seeing their faces light up, hearing the stories the animals brought out, and watching the calm they brought to the home was truly special.
“We always look for meaningful ways to enhance the wellbeing of those we support, and pet therapy ticks so many boxes. We’ll definitely be doing this again.”
Pet therapy is well known for its many benefits, particularly in care settings. Studies have shown that spending time with animals can help reduce anxiety, lift mood, encourage social interaction, and even lower blood pressure.
At Featherton House, part of Wren Retirement Living, the visit proved to be a big hit with residents, who enjoyed stroking, holding and learning about the animals.
The visit was part of Featherton House’s ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of residents through engaging and inclusive activities that promote happiness, connection, and wellbeing.
