Santa workout helps residents stay active

WHEN Santa visited Waterbeach Lodge care home in Cambridge recently, he came to give residents a workout rather than to hand out presents.

Beneath the red and white Santa outfit was fitness instructor Kieran Spitzer from the charity Living Sport. Kieran contacted Waterbeach Lodge recently to offer them a variety of sports equipment along with tuition for residents to help make fitness activities fun and stimulating.

Over a six-week period he delivered a course on how to use the equipment and he now visits the care home on special occasions, including Halloween and Christmas.

“Our residents absolutely adore Kieran,” said Charlene Howell, activities manager at Waterbeach Lodge. “He takes time to give each person the attention and support they need.”

Living Sport is a charity that was set up in 2006 with funding from Cambridge Community Foundation to improve the health, happiness and wellbeing of the people of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by supporting them to be active.

The charity is one of a network of 43 active partnerships in England supported by Sport England with funding from the National Lottery. Each partner shares the vision of a nation of more equal, inclusive and connected communities, maximising the role of movement, sport and physical activity.
